Connecticut has returned a total of $1.2 billion in unclaimed property to rightful owners since 1998 through its CTBigList.gov website, according to the state treasurerβs office. While bank accounts are among the most common types of unclaimed property, a safe deposit box can also be left behind when the owner dies and the family is unaware of its existence. And sometimes the safe deposit boxes contain veterans' medals.
